Charles Ferguson's brilliant film on the financial crisis won the Academy Award last night for Best Documentary Feature. In itself, the Oscar represents a win for the anti-bailout movement, but Ferguson seized the moment during his speech to make this simple, but powerful statement:
"Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by financial fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that's wrong."
And remember, he said this in front of a crowd who just two years ago were falling all over themselves pledging their readiness to "serve" the newly elected Barack Obama. More comments that Reuters picked up from Ferguson backstage:
“The biggest surprise to me personally and biggest disappointment was that nobody in the Obama administration would speak with me even off the record — including people that I’ve known for many, many years."
“Unfortunately, I think that the reason is predominantly that the financial industry has become so politically powerful that it is able to inhibit the normal process of justice and law enforcement."
