There are two ways of looking at this -- we can be thankful we nabbed him, and applaud the cooperation between the FBI and Homeland Security or we can wonder how he was able to board an international flight and almost leave the country, when his name had been known to investigators since early Monday afternoon.
One would think that every airport (and I mean every single flight desk) in the country would have been alerted, and especially the check-in desks for international flights at NYC airports. Apparently not, as Shahzad was allowed to board the flight and came within minutes of escape.

Authorities became aware of Shahzad's identity Monday afternoon, and he was arrested at about 11:45 p.m. Monday. Shahzad's flight to Dubai had left the gate and was headed toward the runway when authorities discovered that he was on board and wanted. He was removed from the plane and taken into custody, an official said.
