BAILOUTMOBILE - Chevy Volt Costing Taxpayers Up to $250K Per Vehicle

Each Chevy Volt sold thus far may have as much as $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives behind it – a total of $3 billion altogether, according to an analysis by James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

“It just goes to show  there are certain folks that will spend anything to get their vision of what people should do,” said State Representative Tom McMillin, R-Rochester Hills. “It’s a glaring example of the failure of central planning trying to force citizens to purchase something they may not want. … They should let the free market make those decisions.”

“This might be the most government-supported car since the Trabant,” said Hohman, referring to the car produced by the former Communist state of East Germany.

According to GM CEO Dan Akerson, the average Volt owner makes $170,000 per year.

Electric Car Safety Tips Shared at Firehouse Expo

Each of the two vehicles, the Volt and Nissan's Leaf, have two electrical systems, one that is purely high-voltage, up to 400 volts, used to propel the vehicle and another 12-volt system that is used much as a conventional vehicle to power accessories and lights.
"You must disconnect both," Moore said to the more than 200 people gathered to listen to his words of wisdom.
Throughout the presentation, Moore had several tips that he called "teaching points." Among those were the paramount need to make sure the vehicle is completely off while tending to patients or trying to make extrications. He said both the Volt and the Leaf have keyless, push-button "start" systems that can be de-activated by pushing the button on the dash or console once, if the vehicle is still on. Both vehicles' start mechanisms are illuminated, although Moore said neither is easy to see, especially in daylight.
Moore said both vehicles, which are not to be confused with hybrid vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, have master disconnects which are plugs in the center tunnel of the car accessible from inside the vehicle. It's also important to cut the 12-volt battery systems as well in accordance with manufacturers' requirements.
In both the Volt and the Nissan, the batteries are under the vehicle and cribbing and jacking is not recommended, Moore said.
"You will puncture the batteries if you do that and that would not be a good thing," he said. There are places were vehicles can be jacked and he recommended firefighters visit a dealership to crawl around under the rigs to get an idea where jacking can be done safely. He commented that the manufacturers do not offer suggestions on that score.
The batteries in the plug-in vehicle are remarkably different, he said, noting the Leaf and Nissan use lithium ion batteries, not the nickel hydride batteries found in hybrid vehicles.
"If you ever come across one of these that are burning, you must wear full packs," Moore said, noting that respiratory protection is essential. "It will be a respiratory problem. We are talking lethal, lethal gases. It's a very big deal. Pack up and keep it on to the very end when it's completely cooled and there are no more fumes or vapors coming off of it."

I have a brother-in-law who manages a Ford dealership in NC. He says they regularly get new customers who were lifelong Chevy/GM buyers coming in for a new F-150 or what have you because "Ford didn't take any bailout money."

People may forget most of the now-countless episodes of financial fraud and corruption, but TARP is the one wound that just gets angrier, like a pustulant boil. The idiots on TV can yammer away about TARP being paid back ("with interest!") all they want, but the die has set in the U.S. Regular folks just aren't fooled by such nonsense talk.

What a P.R. disaster for Congress and the banks. Serves the arrogant pricks right, forced to roam the earth with a scarlet letter.

I just have one question for the greenies. What do you think is going to happen when everyone has one of these clown cars and on a 90 degree + day across the midwest or the east coast or both. They come home from work at about 3:00 when the sun is blaring and they plug in there clown car to charge it back up to 400 volts???? WOW!!! Thats gonna be some demand on the grid. I know that here in chicago we can barley keep up with the AC on a hot day. California forget about it.

I don't really care much for the Volt because it uses electric for only 40 miles and then it's all gasoline. But, you people that keep saying "let the market decide what people will buy" are utter loons!!! When the ship is sinking, you don't wait for the ocean to overflow the deck before you head for the lifeboat! In the same way, you don't wait for gasoline to be $5 per gallon, before you start making electric cars and use wind turbines, solar panels, and geothermal for electricity! The 1980s isn't coming back. Oil is going away. We need renewable energy now! Either you are too selfish or ignorant to see that. And BTW, the R&D technology might cost a lot on the front-end, but with the more electric cars that they sell, those figures keep decreasing as cost per car!!

If I had my way, I would put a $40,000 tax on any NEW vehicle that didn't drive over 100 mpg. And if you made more than $200K per year and owned a gas-guzzling vehicle, then you would be taxed an additional $50K per car per year. Enough is enough. It's time selfishness and greed gets a serious smackdown, because these people are destroying the USA!

Judicial Watch said Wednesday that it filed the lawsuit after the Energy Department failed to provide documents in response to a November Freedom of Information Act request.

The reasons why smart people do not buy Electric or Hybrid cars are: Batteries are expensive, short lived, efficiency isn’t 100 % and the electricity is not free. Going electric you won’t decrease Air Pollution because, 50 % of the electricity is produced by burning COAL. By the way a Jetta Diesel, TDI for $23000 makes 40MPG. With a full tank of Chevy Volt, driving non-stop, you make 37MPG, plus $3 or more, the price of electricity you charged 16.0-kW-hr lithium-ion, the hefty $10000 of the 750-pound battery pack.
Using Chevy Volt, in the Electric Mode Only, Charging and Discharging the battery pack every day, is going to cost you $1000 in electricity, plus $3000 in the battery amortization, with a TOTAL of $4000 per year.
