The MTA has posted several pictures to Flickr showing subway stations and Grand Central totally abandoned ahead of Hurricane Sandy.
In an update early this morning, it was announced that ALL U.S. stock exchanges will be closed Monday, including electronic trading.

In 1938 a category 3 hurricane left 600 people dead in New England. During that ferocious hurricane, also known as the Yankee Clipper and the Long Island Express, the Empire State Building reportedly swayed with wind gusts, and 60 people in New York City alone were killed, says Oren Yaniv at the New York Daily News. Unlike Sandy, 1938's powerful storm came "without warning," says History.com, and "was born out a tropical cyclone that developed in the eastern Atlantic." The hurricane was expected to make landfall in Florida, but at the last minute it changed course, barreling north at more than 60 mph and gaining strength over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. It caught New England, and especially New York's Long Island, completely off guard, and amounted to "the most destructive storm to strike the region in the 20th century." In this strangely compelling historic video of the storm, winds whip New York City residents braving the streets, power lines throughout New England lean and dangle precariously, and flood waters crash into seaside homes, engulfing what looks like a trolley in one of the region's cities.

Already have tree branches down and am expecting sustained winds of 88-95 mph w/higher gusts from 1300-2000 EDT and then winds of 50+ until late tuesday. This will delay any power restoration efforts. High rise building in affected areas may be affected as wind speed increases with height, (1/7 power law), by about 20% percent per 100 foot increase in height.
Expecting long term power outages and loss of communications in a few hours. This is going to be nasty inland here and particularly bad for properties along the nearby shoreline.

A few trees are down in the Boston area and due to the layout of large buildings, I expect the 'venturi effect' to cause some damage and would expect NYC and other metro areas north of NYC along the coast to see the same.
Wind is starting to gust up pretty good now out of the northeast and we have very light rain. I am anticipating that by mid afternoon I will be offline.

A few Boston TV stations are already on backup power due to outages and it's just starting. The coastal flooding will be at its worst around 8 pm EDT when high tide arrives again. The Cape area just recorded 81mph winds (at 10 meters.) I am seeing gusts to 60+ now. Widespead power outages are now being reported throughout the coastal regions.
However, I did stock up on beer this morning.

A labor union official who is working with city officials on the Rapid Repairs program said there are not enough electricians in New York City available to efficiently handle all the inspections and repairs required to get power back on for tens of thousands of city residents.

A bill that was authored by an Ironworkers’ union organizer to expand union-only Project Labor Agreements–to include Hurricane Sandy cleanup and reconstruction–passed the New Jersey Senate on Monday along party lines 23-13.
The Ironworkers’ union organizer who drafted the pro-union bill, Steven Sweeney, also happens to be the president of the New Jersey Senate and recently accused New Jersey Governor Chris Christie of “praying” for Hurricane Sandy to hit New Jersey.
As it turns out, though, unions must be counting their blessing with the New Jersey’s Senate passage of S. 2425 which adds adds to an already-existing discriminatory PLA laws in New Jersey:
New Jersey has had a project labor agreement law on the books since 2002, but highways, bridges, pumping stations and water and sewage treatment plants were exempted. With extensive rebuilding needed on those structures along the shore, this bill includes them.

A “superbomb” storm is being predicted for Christmas Day in the Northeast United states according to WeatherBell Meteorologist Dr. Ryan Maue who has pointed out it looks to be reminiscent of the Cleveland Superbomb of 1978 aka the “Great New England Blizzard of 1978″.
This GFS forecast model for Christmas Day shows the depth of the low, poised to gather moisture from the Great Lakes and dump it into the Northeastern U.S. over the next 24-48 hours, potentially making Christmas and post-Christmas travel a nightmare, but … there is a twist..

For reference, a 958 millibar low pressure system is as low as the central pressure for some tropical storms and nearly that of some hurricanes. For example Hurricane Sandy had a central pressure of 940 mbar or 27.76 inHg.
According to the Time article on the Cleveland Superbomb of 1978:
Meteorologists have a name for a storm that occurs when air pressure drops very rapidly as a jet stream brings in moisture: a weather bomb. In late January 1978, a low-pressure system moving from the Gulf Coast met with two other low-pressure systems, one from the Southwest and one from Canada, to create one of the worst snowstorms the Midwest has ever seen. With barometric pressure so low, it was more like a hurricane than a snowstorm, the so-called Cleveland Superbomb dumped 1-3 ft. (30-90 cm) of snow on several Midwestern states, including Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Wind gusts approached 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h), causing snowdrifts to reach heights of 25 ft. (8 m) in some areas. Such snowdrifts made roadways impassable, forcing doctors and emergency personnel to ski and snowmobile their way to those in need. Indiana’s governor sent tanks down I-65 to remove stranded trucks, while in Ohio, National Guard helicopters flew some 2,700 missions to help stranded drivers. About 70 deaths are attributed to the storm.
While the Cleveland Superbomb has an intriguing name, the most well-known snowstorm of that year was known simply as the Great New England Blizzard of 1978. On Feb. 6, about two weeks after the Superbomb, a blizzard dealt Boston and other parts of the Northeast as many as 27 in. (69 cm) of snow with winds of 80-110 m.p.h. (130-180 km/h). Thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed and approximately 100 people died.

That said, looks like hurricane season may get interesting. Joe Bastardi and the crew at Weatherbell Analytics predicted the Louisiana storm that caused the flooding more than a week in advance but MSM IGNORED IT.
