Great interview.

It's amazing how infrequently people call out their own "team" the way Greenwald called out progressive Democrats here. A couple who come to mind are Yves, who's been kicking the shit out of Obama since before he took office, and (on the other side of the spectrum) Denninger, who routinely bashes Republicans and the Tea Party (which he had a big hand in forming, prior to its cave-in to Wall Street).

A lot of other journalists and commenters, though, revert to craven lesser-evil posturing, which does nothing but cram electoral tickets full of indistinguishable shitheads like Obamney.

Another key point Greenwald touches on (thanks to Rudkowski's prompt) is the disappearance of real journalists. How many journalists today are real troublemakers? The vast majority of them are as threatening as arthritic pomeranians. In lieu of analyzing hard facts, they trot out establishment mouthpieces to volley about insipid quotes designed not to offend any plutocrats.

Had the same thought about Greenwald's comment about the best journalists being troublemakers. Dylan Ratigan comes to mind immediately. Mike Wallace for 50 years. Jonathon Karl for ABC. Virtually all the financial bloggers. Max Keiser was born to f*ck with people, certainly.

60 Minutes doesn't have anyone on staff who fits that mold anymore. The show has sucked for the past several years. And I can't think of a single network reporter, besides Jonathon Karl at ABC, who busts heads while getting the story.

Lauren Lyster is the real thing. But on a MAJOR network? Nada.

Steve Kroft tried pretty hard on 60 Minutes to get at the real roots of the financial crisis. But he never put the blade into punks like Lanny Breuer. How in the hell do you do an interview about the lack of criminal prosecutions without having a basis for historical comparison, say, the 3400 people who went to jail for the S&L frauds? When Breuer says, "well, it's just soooooooooo hard to prove criminal intent," I mean, put it to him: (1) Was Blll Black a sorcerer? (2) Has the burden of proof in criminal trials changed in the last 500 years? (3) Isn't it true that with networks and computers capturing EVERY corporate communication for the last 15-20 years, prosecutions should be a lot easier since the paper trail is now a paper superhighway? (4) Tell us exactly what evidence you'd need to see in order to prosecute. (5) Didn't your law firm create MERS, which is part of the foreclosure crisis? (6) Do you not believe, sir, that fraud on the court is a crime? Lanny Breuer is a fucking clown and a liar, and exposing him as such would take just a modicum of preparation. Watching Breuer skate is like watching Being There in real time. It's just surreal.

NPR on the Dianne Ream show had Mary Schapiro on and a couple of others that seemed to saying how hard it was to pursue the criminals because it was too difficult to prove intent. Just a yawn fest really. I wanted to stay engaged in the program but just could not make it past 25 minutes.
