Looks like the army just protected the police from the protester brutality. Notice the guns pointing toward the protesters.

John, it's possible but if so, the protesters used the shield and the riot police did not. If the army turns against Mubarak he's history. What a precedent that would set for other countries.

Those are not tanks, they are armored personnel carriers. The weapons are not manned, so there would be no ammo in them to prevent protesters from climbing on and using them.
